We hear all about Black Friday sales the big box stores advertise. What you don’t hear is how much these very same stores are taking advantage of the general public.
There was an article in Newsday on Nov 24th about how “expert” shoppers get great Black Friday deals. One quote was from an “expert” was, “If a store doesn’t give you at least 30% to 40% off I don’t even consider going to that store”. So if a store like Macy’s has extremely high prices on a item XYZ, say $100 and they have a 40% off sale or reduced to to $60, it’s a good deal? While a store with a regular rock bottom price of $50 on item XYZ and has a 10% off sale or to $45 it’s not a good deal? Makes you go huh? But things like 40% off sales makes big box retailers mouth water as they smell blood, the blood of a so called expert shopper being fooled and spending money at their store at a price that is not such a bargain. But the “expert” can tell all their friends they saved 40%, yeah!
In the same Newsday article, a comment by another “expert” was, “I get my friends and relatives to stay on lines for me”, this so they can travel to various stores and get multiple deals at different times. Does anyone bother to figure out how much of a savings it is and how many hours you and your friends and relatives are planning and waiting on lines? Most times the savings amount to much less than minimum wage as the time spend of each person needs to be counted. Also nothing like making enemies by asking your friends and relatives to stand on lines for you. They will soon be an expert shopper that people refuse to shop with.
So everything has to be considered, the general public needs to lose the mentality of “wow 40% off, that’s a great deal”. You aren’t going to beat the big box stores. This is what they do for a living 365 days a year. Anyone that considers themselves an expert shopper does not have any idea on what goes into promotions of the big box stores and how the public is nearly always fooled. But there are many “expert” shoppers that refuse to believe this and those are the big box stores dream customers.
